I’m a writer. I write things.
Specifically, I’m a writer of end-user documentation by day, but it doesn’t leave a lot of room for creative expression. On a recent trip to Mexico, I posted some narrative Facebook updates about the people I saw and interacted with, and apparently the people called out for more.
And so, I present to you: a blog.
My primary creative writing project is a part of Camp NaNoWriMo, spurred on by a group of colleagues who also like to write things – my goal is 30,000 words in the month of April. Because I didn’t have a lot of time to prepare a plot or hook or anything, I am essentially writing a Dungeons and Dragons fanfiction – I have the 5th edition starter set, and I’m using the adventure and character sheets as a guideline. This means that place names and names of supplementary characters (NPCs) are not my own, with the exception of any time I need to fill in the blanks. The names and physical characteristics of the main characters are my own, as are the ways they interact with each other, the other people around them, and the world they are in. I’m basically DM’ing a DND campaign for my multiple personalities.
I am also very new to Dungeons and Dragons, having never actually played. I read the Dragonlance series as a kid, and I’ve watched Critical Role, but that is it. Where I can, I use the internet to research and supplement the setting based on what is known, but sometimes I just make it up for the sake of progression. What I’m saying here is that I’m not going to be perfectly canonical and rule-obsessed. I am going to be rolling dice to determine combat scenes, mostly because I struggle to put my characters in any sort of hardship and I don’t want them to seem like superheros. After a few experimental combat scenes, my dice don’t like me, so I feel like I’ll be trying to bring my characters back from the brink of death and destruction…often.
I’m also trying very, VERY hard not to edit myself as I write – it’s what holds me back. So if you’re going to leave a comment, please don’t be nit-picky…but if you notice a major plot or character inconsistency, feel free to point it out.
Above all, if what I’m writing brings you even a glimmer of joy or hope or distracts you from the insanity of the world right now – please let me know. I’d love to know that I have an impact, no matter how small.
